Meltham 4 – Keighley 4

In a hard match, played under difficult pitch conditions, against a very physical Keighley side, Meltham never took a backward step.  Although Meltham were of smaller stature, they carried the game to Keighley, throughout the game.

In a match of very few chances, Meltham opened the scoring, with a good drive from Oliver taken them within 15 metres from the line.  The ball was played along to the line, where the winger Frazer Morris powered through a determined defence to score in the corner.  David Dyson was unable to convert from such a tight angle.  Both sides battled

Second half, continued like the first, both sides defending strongly, but after a silly penalty allowed Keighley to gain yards, sloppy defence from Meltham allowed them to cross the line for their try.  Keighley, also unable to convert, meant the score was level at 4 a piece.

The game continued with Meltham attacking the Keighley line, eventually in the final minutes David Dyson put the ball down, but a dubious knock on decision from the ref, followed by the full-time whistle

Best Forward: Elliot Morris

Man of the Match: Haydn Evans

Meltham 30                    West Bowling 4

Meltham continued their hunt for the premiership title with a stunning performance of strength and power against a large West Bowling side who struggled to match its opponents for most of the game. Meltham made the most of the toss by choosing to go down the hill in the first half. A decision that allowed Meltham to start free scoring at will against a dogged and broken West Bowling defence. Elliot Morris who recently got into Kirklees under 12’s service area started in his usual rich vein of form and opened the scoring with a powerful drive up the middle of the home sides defence to crash in under the posts which in turn, made David Dyson’s conversion a simple success. A short range dummy by Liam Goddard at acting half, opened a gap which allowed him to drive low and hard to secure another score with David Dyson converting the tricky kick. Morris then went on to score his second after a fortunate Joe Wood spot kick grubbered and bounced nicely into the arms of  E Morris travelling at speed to burst through the scrambling bowling defence and touch down under the sticks. An impressive drive by the ever consistent Oliver Kirk saw him bust a hole through the Bradford sides struggling defence and barn storm his way half the pitch to score a trade mark try under the posts to end the first half with a comfortable 24-0 advantage to take into the second half.

The second half saw West Bowling come down the hill with new vigour and begin to run at the Meltham line but some amazing work from Meltham in defence limited west bowling to one solitary try. E Morris rounded off a big display with his hat trick after a typical yet inspiring charge through a broken bowling defence to allow Dyson to convert his fifth from as many attempts and take Meltham to the final score and whistle. The display was well rounded and showed skill and tactical work of a much older team which made the man of the match selection even harder to make. Best back went to Fraser Morris who is following in his big brother’s footsteps with some impressive tackling work. Best forward went to Aiden Egdell for his strong running of the ball and tireless improvement in defence. Man of the Match award went to Scott Gledhill for his excellent contribution at full back and concentration under high pressure. There were also good strong displays from Joe Wood and Cameron Haigh who both worked relentlessly in attack and bodyline defending. Meltham hope to make the home advantage count in the penultimate game to the season against Keighley Cubs this week. A win could see them set a final title decider against Halifax Irish the following Wednesday.

6 April 2008

Meltham 34 -  Siddal 24

Meltham continued their title hunt with a convincing victory over Siddal away from home.

Meltham caught Siddal cold with a try from the first attacking set by Elliott Morris. Further trys from Oliver Kirk and Morris saw the All Blacks take a comfortable 16 nil lead, before Siddal saw a quick move turn into a score

Oliver Kirk took command to burst through the broken Siddal line and charge 60 metres to score under the sticks taking the lead to a comfortable 22-6 lead at the interval.

The second half saw Meltham step of the accelerator and this let Siddal claw their way back into the game with only a Cameron Haigh try separating the teams at 28-24.

It was all set for a tense finale until Elliot Morris allowed his class to shine through with a 50 metre break to touch down the final score under the posts. David Dyson converted to take his tally to 4 for the game.

Strong defensive work from Liam Goddard and Joe Wood allowed the win to happen, with best back going to Scott Gledhill for a great workload.

Best Forward was awarded to Oliver Kirk for his strength in running and two trys. Man of the match was awarded to the ever reliable Elliot Morris for a well deserved hat trick.

16 March 2008

Meltham 26 Townville 4

Meltham kept up the pressure with a convincing second half display which saw Meltham take all 4 points in this double header contest to go second in the league.  The first half saw the scores headlocked at 4-4, after Meltham took the lead with a sweeping move and a wide ball from consistent hooker, Adam Worrall to allow Cameron Haigh to finish off in the corner.  Townville soon equalised which made for a tense interval and second half, with neither side wanting to give an inch to their opponents.  The muddy conditions didn't deter the All Blacks after the restart and they soon stepped up a gear to tear into the broken Townville defence. Elliot Morris was in outstanding form as ever, even after a yellow card sin bin for retaliating to a dirty tackle from a disgruntled Townville player.  This didn't stop him from making yet another hat trick to bury the opposition and seal the fourth victory on the trot for the constantly improving All Blacks. One outstanding try came from the strong break made by Alex Markowycz to shake off four Townville defenders and crash over to take his second try in as many games.  Two conversions were made by captain David Dyson and one from Oliver Kirk. The entire team were given a man of the match award for a display of rugby league which reached far beyond the years and experience of its participants.

9 March 2008

Meltham 24 – West Bowling 6

Meltham took firm control of a determined West Bowling outfit to cruise to a 24-6 win at home. Meltham took the first blood with a good try in the corner from Fraser Morris after a clever chip over the top from David Dyson. Unfortunately Dyson could not convert the score which only gave Meltham a tight lead of 4-0 after 15 minutes played. Some sloppy defensive work let West Bowling straight back into the game to even the scores at 4-4 into the interval.
After the restart Meltham stepped up a gear to accelerate past west bowling down the hill and make four more trys. Scores came from Elliott Morris, Oliver Kirk, Joe Wood and Alex Markowycz who picked up his first try of the season. Conversions were added by David Dyson and Oliver Kirk.

Best back award went to Fraser Morris who appears to be growing in confidence with every progressing game. Best forward went to Oliver Kirk for an outstanding display in attack.

2 March 2008

Keighley 14 - Meltham 26

Meltham 11 man team topple Keighley 16.

Undeterred by only scraping 11 players for a big trip to Keighley Cougar Cubs, the inspirational Meltham side played what has to be the best 40 minutes of rugby they have ever produced.

Meltham knew this contest was going to be a tough physical encounter but rose beyond the challenge to send a clear message to the rest of the league.

The All Black's drew first blood with a strong forward drive which saw Elliott Morris charge 30 yards to crash over the line, David Dyson then converted to give Meltham a 0-6 lead.  Morris then went on to score again in the first half, along with a brilliant powerful drive by Oliver Kirk - so at half time the underdogs were leading 0-16.

The second half looked much harder, with Meltham going up the hill, and into the wind.  Keighley took advantage of the tiring Meltham team by bringing the score to a more even 14-16.  This forced Meltham into pulling out the stops and with grit and determination to stem the Keighley flow - Cameron Haigh scored his try in the corner, and a quick short scoot by David Dyson, they pulled ahead again.  With David Dyson converting 3 out of the 5 tries in high winds he worked hard to earn the best back award.  Elliot Morris' brilliant display in both attack and defence earned him Man of the Match.  Oliver Kirk's barnstorming drives earned him Best Forward.  Credit needs to be given to the entire squad for what was an entertaining, inspirational and well deserved win, against a big strong Keighley squad.

24 February 2008

Victoria Rangers 10 - Meltham 18

Meltham came through a tough first game to triumph over a much improved Ranger's squad.

Rangers scored first to lead with a short range effort until Meltham hit back and David Dyson converted Elliot Morris' first try.

Liam Goddard made the next score count with a dummy pass, and crashed over from 10 yards, again converted by Dyson.  Elliott Morris put the game further out of reach for Rangers with a 50 yard break to score his second try, and Dyson's hat trick of conversions.  Despite a fantastic interception from a Rangers scrum half to take them to 10 points, Meltham had secured a well deserved win.

Some huge defensive hits by Elliott Morris saw him receive Best Forward, with great support by Cameron Haigh.  Best Back went to Scott Gledhill.

10 February 2008

Meltham 18 – Clayton 18

Meltham ended a run of bad form to hold a strong Clayton side to a fair draw.  Clayton were first to score with a well earned try, which they then converted.  Meltham struck back with a strong forward move to even the score.  They then traded another try and conversion each.

In the second half Meltham took the lead and looked good at 18-12 in the lead.  Clayton persevered to even the score with 10 minutes to go.  Both teams had a tense 10 minutes, with neither team able to break free and get in front, resulting in them sharing the points.  Elliott Morris scored 2 tries, and Best Forward Cameron Haigh getting his first try of the season.  Best Back Alex Markowycz had an awesome game in defence.  All 3 conversions were scored by Captain David Dyson.

6 January 2008

The second half started off well  with Meltham scoring three tries, two of which were converted  to make it  22 –18, the second of which was scored by Joe Wood but good defending by Cameron Haigh  and  Liam Goddard couldn’t stop the home side from crossing under the posts in the very last minute to pinch the win.

11 November 2008

Halifax Irish 16 – Meltham 10

Meltham lost this close  game. They were 10 nil down by half time after a slow start.  Things improved after a half time talk and both their attack and defence improved.  After good work by the forwards Elliot Morris went over for a try in the corner, David Dyson was unlucky with the kick which hit the upright.  More good driving from Cameron Haigh, Oliver Kirk and Aiden Egdell again put Morris in for a try, this time Dyson made the conversion to complete the scoring.  Kirk was judged to have knocked on in the last minute, a try which would have possibly levelled the score.

14 October 2007

Meltham All Blacks 6 – Keighley 0

Meltham All Blacks dug very deep to gain a well earned 6 – 0 win against a very good Keighley side. In the first half, the teams were evenly matched although Meltham went closest to scoring with a try that was disallowed, the half belonged to two very strong defenses.  In the second half Meltham’s superior fitness began to show   as they gained more and more field position.  Eventually Meltham, through some fine attacking work by Elliot Morris managed to cross the line and score a try which was converted by David Dyson.  Best forward was Oliver Kirk with the defensive work of Joe Wood and fullback Scott Gledhill earning them best back awards. Keighley were not giving up with their forwards driving and driving. Keighley went over the try line with thirty seconds to go, but knocked on, it was a tough and rough game, however Meltham came out on top.

7 October 2007

Meltham All Blacks 42 – Victoria 14

Under 12’s winning run continues. In a hard fought match away against Victoria Rangers Meltham triumphed due to a great defensive effort. After a slow start they ran in a couple of tries which calmed the nerves, almost immediately Victoria hit back and piled on the pressure but Meltham held them and hit back on the break to lead 22 - 4 at half time. After the break the game evened out and both sides ran hard, going try for try but Meltham’s greater defensive effort told in the end with them running out 42 – 14 winners.  Tries were scored by Elliot Morris (3), Joe Wood (2), Aiden Egdell, Charlie Slater and David Dyson with one apiece. Good defensive work, especially by Joe Wood  and Liam Goddard caused Clayton to knock the ball on in there own half which was picked up by Elliot Morris who ran in and scored once again under the posts .This try was also converted by Dyson. The second half was much the same with good defensive work keeping Clayton out and forcing them to make mistakes from which Meltham scored two more tries, one from Wood   and the other from Morris, both of which were converted by Dyson. Clayton grabbed a late try at the end but it was too late to make a difference.

13 April 2008 – Huddersfield Cup – Semi-final

 Meltham 16  Newsome 10

Meltham are through to the final of the Huddersfield cup with a convincing win over Newsome.
Playing up the slope and against driving wind and rain in the first period Meltham started the game in determined fashion. The forwards were working overtime to make ground and with a very aggressive defence Newsome were finding it difficult to contain their opponents. It was against the run of play that Newsome scored first, whilst looking for a breach in the defensive line a stray pass was intercepted for the player to race 80 metres to score under the posts. This only seemed to spur the enthusiastic Meltham side onto a greater effort. Within 5 minutes they were back in contention when Toby King sold the defence a neat dummy to dive over in the corner. Not to be outdone by his brother, George King soon followed up with a barnstorming run to the line giving Meltham a lead they never looked like losing.

Half time Meltham 10 Newsome 6

In the second period Meltham took complete control of the game, it was only the poor weather conditions and a severe penalty count that kept Newsome in the game. Corey Noel was on the receiving end of a fantastic handling move where the ball was passed from one side of the field and back. Daniel Hirst converted and the game was over as a contest. With time running out and after three consecutive penalties Newsome scored with the last move of the game.

3 February 2008  WR Cup – Semi-final

Meltham 8 - Siddal 46

Meltham were only able to play with 12 players due to injury and illness. Playing against undefeated Siddal in the semi final of the West Riding Cup the result was never really in doubt. Meltham did their best to contain the much larger Siddal team and in the first period had most of the attacking field position. The first half finished 16 points to 4 to Siddal.

In the second period the tiring Meltham side struggled to contain the opposition, one player in particular who scored 6 tries and set up the other. Meltham’s tries were scored by Corey Noel and Toby King. Man of the match went to George King who was tireless in driving the team forward from start to finish.

6 January 2008

Siddal 34 Meltham 4

Due to a sickness bug that has affected over half of the team Meltham were only able to field 11 players against an undefeated Siddal team who are top of the league. The effort and commitment of the players who took to the field was of the highest order.
With Meltham not having played a game for seven weeks they were bound to find the early pace difficult, and after conceding three penalties in a row for technical offences Siddal used their 2 man advantage to gain the upper hand. Lucas Baines playing his first game at hooker made several telling tackles. Corey Noel playing his first game in the second row showed what a great prospect he is, but the highlight of the game for Meltham was Aidan Addy. With Aidan playing only his fourth ever game of rugby the other three being on the wing, he was thrown in at the deep end and asked to play the key position of scrum half. What he lacked in experience he certainly made up for it with lots of natural talent and enthusiasm. Meltham’s only score came in the second period after a good break from Daniel Hirst who had shown real commitment to turn up to play whilst poorly. The ball was then passed along the line for Jack Thompson to go over in the corner.
Joint man of the match was awarded to Jack Thompson and Aidan Addy

28 October 2007 – WR Cup

Underbank Rangers 0 – Meltham 38

The powerful Meltham side dominated this game from start to finish. Although Underbank never gave up trying they were outplayed by a more skillful team.
Meltham soon made their intentions clear scoring three tries in the first five minutes. The first was a solo effort from George King, not to be outdone Tre Miller followed suit with a barnstorming run to the line. Jack Thompson was on the receiving end of some great ball handling to score out wide. Daniel Hirst showed good footwork to jink past three defenders to score, and Toby King finished off the first half scoring finishing off after some strong runs by the forwards. Half time 26 to 0.

In the second period Meltham eased off but still managed to score two further tries through Sam Rochford and a second for George King. It was only down to Meltham controversially having three second half tries disallowed that kept the score respectable. Top Tackler was Lucas Baines and man of the match was Michael Holmes.

21 October 2007 – Yorkshire Cup

East Leeds 10  Meltham 30

Meltham travelled to Leeds with just 13 players, but a near faultless first half performance saw them saw them totally dominate and virtually win the game by half time.
Meltham soon made their intentions clear scoring with their first touch of the ball, some great approach work from the forwards saw George King crashing onto a short ball and going over under the posts.
The bigger Leeds side tried to take Meltham on up the middle, but with the defence working as a controlled aggressive unit the ball was spilled on several occasions. What this young side lack in size they more than make up for it with speed and ball handling. Toby King finished off a great move receiving the ball out wide beating the cover and going over in the corner. Next on the score sheet was flying winger Sam Dennis.  Daniel Hirst playing at hooker for the first time finished off after some great ball handling, and to finish the scoring in the first half Jack Thackeray playing in an unaccustomed role at scrum half showed great footwork to beat the cover and race 60 metres to score. Half time 24 to 0.
In the second period Meltham seemed to take their foot off the gas giving several penalties away meaning they were constantly on the back foot. The defence was breached when after 4 consecutive penalties a Leeds player went over from dummy half. Meltham's response was to score straight away with a very good individual effort from Jack Thackeray who once again showed great footwork to break the line and race 80 metres to score. Leeds had the last laugh scoring a consolation try in the final minutes. Top Tackler was Corey Noel and man of the match was George King.  Coaches Andy King and Richard Baines although pleased with the result will be working on the players concentration levels and discipline for the entire game and aim to get that part of their game up to scratch ready for next week when they face local rivals Underbank Rangers.

7 October 2007 - Yorkshire Cup

Wibsey 10  - Meltham 24

Meltham travelled to Bradford to take on Yorkshire league rivals Wibsey in the first round of the Yorkshire cup. Although Wibsey were the much bigger side they struggled to compete against the more aggressive well drilled and skilful Meltham outfit. George King got Meltham off to the perfect start backing up a break from Dan Hirst. Wibsey soon levelled the score from a good kick on the last tackle. This seemed to kick Meltham into gear as they took control for the remainder of the game. Sam Dennis put Meltham back in front finishing off a great handling move in the corner. Corey Noel was next on the score sheet putting Meltham 16 to 4 up at the break. After the break Wibsey tried to get back into the game but Meltham’s defence was uncompromising. Tre Miller scored his first of the season with a barnstorming run. Corey Noel finished off the scoring with a length of the field effort to claim his second. Man of the match and top tackler was Sam Rochford.

23 September 2007

West Bowling 14 Meltham 26

Due to injuries and players being unavailable this was a makeshift Meltham side. Several players were playing in positions for the first time. The two usual wingers Connor Robertson and Jordan Valerio played in the second row, whilst the two second rowers Lucas Baines and Kaide Smith played at prop.

What this Meltham side might lack in size they more than make up for it playing with heart, skill and pace. It was understandable with so many players playing out of position Meltham would start the game slowly.  West Bowling soon raced into a 6 point lead. Toby King steadied the ship with a great dummy to dart through a gap in the corner. Meltham next try was a superb team effort after some strong forward runs they went to the blindside on the last tackle passing the ball through several pairs of hands for Sam Dennis to finish of in the corner. West Bowling replied to make it 10 - 8 at the interval.

In the second period Meltham stepped up a gear and were soon in command of the game. Jack Thackeray showed a real turn of pace to score in the corner his first try for the team. George King who was a real handful for the West Bowling defenders crossed for 2 tries and Kaide Smith capped a powerhouse display with the final try.

Top Tackler was Sam Rochford. Joint man of the match was awarded to Kaide Smith and George King.

16 September 2007

 Meltham 44 Newsome 6

Due to injuries and players being unavailable Meltham were forced to play with an under strength team, but still proved far too strong for a brave but out classed Newsome side. If it wasn’t for the blustery conditions where only two conversions were kicked from the ten tries scored the score could have been much greater.

Meltham elected to kick down the slope with the wind at their backs in the first half hoping to build up a lead. This soon proved to be the case scoring with their first attacking opportunity, Jordan Valerio finished off a great handling move in the corner. Tries were soon being scored at regular intervals. George King helped himself to a brace, as did Corey Noel and Tre Miller. Other scorers were Jack Thompson and Daniel Hirst with a length of the field effort. Newsome managed a consolation score with a good individual effort from Joe Gillespie.

In a good defensive effort three players shared top tackler with ten, George King, Sam Rochford and Toby King. Man of the match for the second week running was the ever improving Corey Noel.
